Central venous catheters: incidence and predictive factors of venous thrombosis

AIMS Central venous catheter access in an acute setting can be a challenge given underlying disease and risk for venous thrombosis. Peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICCs) are commonly placed but limit sites for fistula creation in patients with chronic renal failure (CKD). The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of venous thrombosis from small bore internal jugular (...

Central venous line-related thrombosis in children: association with central venous line location and insertion technique.

Venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) in children are associated with central venous lines (CVLs). The study objective was to assess whether CVL location and insertion technique are associated with the incidence of VTE in children. We hypothesized that VTE would be more frequent with (1). CVL location on the left body side, (2). CVL location in the subclavian vein rather than the jugular vein, an...

Urokinase therapy in neonates with catheter related central venous thrombosis.

The results of fibrinolytic therapy with urokinase were evaluated in 26 neonates with catheter related central venous thrombosis. Complete thrombolysis could be achieved in 13 patients (50%), partial thrombolysis in 3 patients (12%). No effect was seen in 10 patients (38%). Therapy success was influenced by age, size and location of the thrombus. Coincidence of infection occurred in 16 patients...

The benefit derived from a CVC may be offset by thrombosis and associated complications, such as pulmonary embolism (PE), CVC dysfunction, ...
